
As part of YMCA BC's Violence Against Women Intervention & Support Services (VAWISS), the Y Women's Emergency Shelter is a transition house that provides that provides temporary safe housing and support for women with or without children fleeing violence in the home. 24 hour phone support available.
We believe that when women feel supported, believed, and heard, they are able to move beyond surviving to thriving. The Y Women's Emergency Shelter provides a safe haven and essential support for women and children fleeing violence, giving them the space and time to decide on their next steps.
The shelter provides support for all types of violence, including, but not limited to: physical, sexualized, verbal, emotional/psychological, financial, neglect, spiritual/cultural, cyberviolence and stalking/criminal harassment.
YMCA BC’s anti-violence programs offer a continuum of services to help women and children find safety and support when leaving violence in the home. If you or someone you know is looking for safety, these programs can help.

Can I bring my children?
Yes. The Y Women's Emergency Shelter provides safe space for women with or without children. Staff can also support mothers and children with emotional care, safety planning, and access to additional services.
Is my stay confidential?
Yes. The shelter follows strict confidentiality practices to protect the safety and privacy of all women and children. Staff will explain any legal limits to confidentiality, such as mandatory reporting in cases of child protection concerns.
Do I need a referral to enter the shelter?
No. You do not need a referral. You can call or text the shelter's 24/7 crisis line at any time to ask questions, discuss your situation, or arrange safe entry.
Can the shelter help me access other services?
Yes. Staff can support you with referrals to housing, legal supports, counselling, income assistance, child services, health care, and other community resources. Advocacy and accompaniment to appointments may also be available.
What if I'm not sure whether my situation counts as "violence"?
If something doesn't feel safe, respectful, or right, you can reach out. Violence can take many forms beyond physical harm. Staff are available 24/7 to talk through your situation and help you understand your options. No judgment, no pressure.
