This Childcare Career Exploration Path program offers newcomers an encouraging space to explore the various pathways to working in child care pathways in Canada, understand required credentials, and learn what it takes to thrive in the child care sector.

Program overview

This 5-week hybrid course introduces newcomers to the Canadian child care field, including roles, credentials, licensing, and workplace expectations. With supportive guidance and accessible learning, participants build a foundation for their future education and employment in early childhood settings.

Designed for those curious about or interested in working with children, the program offers online and in-person learning, practical insights into early years education, and an understanding of safety regulations and child protection laws.

Offered twice a year, the program helps participants gain foundational knowledge before pursuing formal training or employment.

This program is available in downtown Vancouver.

Program eligibility
  • Age: Must be 19 years or older
  • Residency Status: Open to those legally eligible to work in Canada (Permanent Residents, Conventional Refugees, or those under CUAET measures)
  • Interest in working with children is crucial to be successful in this career path
Program schedule
  • Length: 5-week hybrid course
  • Format: Two classes weekly (online + in-person)
  • Class Frequency: Regular weekly classes (specific times vary per cohort)
  • Location: Robert Lee YMCA, with occasional sessions at additional community locations

Will I get preference to work at a YMCA child care facility upon completion of the program?

While program completion does not guarantee or provide preference for employment with our organization, participants gain valuable skills, experience and insights that support their overall career development and employability.
