Program overview

Delivered as part of YMCA BC’s Newcomer Support Services, the Self-Employment for Newcomers (SEN) is a 10-week, cohort-based training program designed specifically for immigrants and newcomers who want to start their own business in Canada.

Facilitated by an experienced Business Advisor, the program provides structured business training, one-to-one consultations, guided business plan development, and field trips to deepen learning and exposure to local business environments.

This program is offered three times a year: winter, spring and fall, and is available in downtown Vancouver.

Program FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our program below.

Do I need to already have a business idea?

No. Many participants come with early-stage ideas. Our Business Advisors will help you explore opportunities and shape a viable plan.

Do I need a computer or internet access?

Yes, the program includes digital literacy components that require digital access.

Is this a certified training program?

No formal certification is provided, but you will receive a participation acknowledgement and ongoing support.

Is this program the same as YMCA's Self Employment Program (SEP)?

No. SEP is a longer, more advanced employment program. If you are not a newcomer, or have been in Canada more than five years, SEP may be a better fit.

I already have a business and I need support. Is SEN the right fit?

If you are a newcomer, yes!

Many of our alumni joined the program while already running businesses abroad or in Canada. Through the program, they gained valuable insights into the Canadian market, best practices and legal requirements.

When you join the YMCA you join more than a gym. You join a community.
