Program overview

We know that starting a business requires sustained mentorship and unwavering support. That’s why we’ve built a comprehensive roadmap to help you navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship with confidence.

The YMCA Self-Employment Program (SEP) is a fully online, 48-week program designed to guide participants from a basic business concept through to full, day-to-day business operation. Our highly skilled team provides blended support through expert coaching, virtual and in-person training, and a robust Learning Management System. You will gain the confidence and skillsets needed to successfully launch and sustain your own business in Canada.

Program eligibility
  • Age: Must be 18 years or older
  • Residency Status: Must be eligible to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Confirmed Refugee)
  • Employment Status: Must be currently unemployed or underemployed (working fewer than 20 hours per week)
  • EI or Benefits: Must have applied for, currently receiving or have received EI in the last 5 years OR must be receiving PWD or PPMB benefits
    • You are also eligible if you identify as having a disability that prevents you from working full-time and are not collecting other BC benefits
  • Location: Residents of the Lower Mainland, Squamish or Sechelt area
  • Program-specific requirements (varies by intake): Please register to join an information session to learn more
Program schedule
  • Length: 48 weeks
    • 10 weeks of Business Plan Development
    • 38 weeks of Launch & Implementation Support
  • Mode: Online/Hybrid
  • Schedule: Variable. Complete session timings and further details will be provided to all participants upon successful enrollment
  • Location: Vancouver, and virtual delivery for eligible regions (the Lower Mainland, Squamish or Sechelt area)

Do I need a fully developed business idea before applying?

You must have a specific business idea and develop a business concept to apply. The program will help you assess feasibility and build a complete business plan with expert guidance.

Is this a certified training program?

No formal certification is provided, but you will receive participation acknowledgement and ongoing support.

Does the program provide support after I launch my business?

Yes. Participants receive ongoing support and coaching throughout the early stages of business operation.

What costs are covered?

The program is fully funded for eligible participants and includes training, coaching and support at no cost.

What if I am a newcomer?

If you have been living in Canada for fewer than five years, and are legally eligible to work here, please explore the Self-Employment for Newcomers program delivered via our Newcomer Support Services team instead.
