Program overview

YCMA BC's Heart and Lung Health programs offer specialized Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation through graduated, clinically supervised, and individualized exercise plans. Both programs include group-based education that supports healthy behaviour change, symptom monitoring, and long term risk reduction.

Participants receive medical oversight, compassionate guidance, and a community of peers with shared lived experience. Our Heart and Lung Health programs provide a safe, inclusive environment where clinically supervised exercise meets community connection.

Program eligibility
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
    • Physician referral required
    • Recent cardiac stress test completed within the last 8 months
    • Adults recovering from cardiac events or managing cardiac conditions
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
    • Physician referral required
    • Recent spirometry confirming COPD or another lung disease (within 5 years)
    • Adults managing chronic lung conditions who would benefit from supervised exercise
Program schedule
  • Mode: In person at Prince George Family YMCA
    • Only education sessions are offered online and in-person, both
  • Frequency: Graduated exercise and education sessions delivered weekly
  • Duration: Intake and discharge assessments; overall program length varies by individual needs

Is this program only for people who recently had a cardiac event or hospitalization?

No. The program supports individuals recovering from recent events as well as those managing long standing heart or lung conditions.

Do I need a doctor�s referral to join?

Yes. Both the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs require a referral from your physician. This ensures the program is safe and appropriate for your health needs.

What happens after I finish rehabilitation?

Participants may transition into the YMCA�s Phase III Pulmonary and Cardiac Maintenance Program, which offers ongoing support to maintain strength and wellness.

Is the program offered online?

Yes. Education sessions and some supervised components are available online to increase accessibility.

What can I expect during sessions?

You will participate in supervised aerobic and strength exercises tailored to your abilities. Each session also includes education on symptom management, lifestyle habits, and long term disease prevention.
